You asked lightly on purpose and it did not help.
That is the thing about the look. You had already made the sentence as small as you could. No pressure in it, no history, nothing about how long it has been. Just a light offer with an easy way out built in.
And she looked at you as though you had suggested something faintly ridiculous, and said no, and went upstairs.
And you stood in a kitchen doing the thing a father does at that moment, which is running the sentence back to find out where you put the weight, and there was no weight in it. That is what makes it sting.
Here is what I want to establish before anything else, because everything depends on it.
She is not refusing you. She is fifteen, and the whole architecture of being fifteen involves declining things that belong to being twelve, and the declining is the work she is doing rather than a message she is sending.
I am not going to give you a technique for getting a yes. This site does not do that and it would be the wrong thing anyway.
I am going to work on the only part of this that is yours, which is what a no costs you and how to make it cost less.
Therefore came his father out
There is a moment in the story of the two sons that people skip because they are watching the one who came home.
And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. (Luke 15:28, King James Version)
Look at what the older son does. He will not go in. That is a refusal, in public, on the biggest evening of the year, in front of everybody.
And look at what the father does with it.
He goes out. He does not send anybody, he does not wait for the son to come round, and he does not treat the refusal as the end of the conversation. He also does not drag him in.
You are a father who can keep asking, and a no tonight has never once been the closing of a door that only you were holding open. Luke 15:28 has a father come out to a refusal rather than treat it as an answer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can put that in front of a man standing in a kitchen.
And notice what happens next in the passage, which is the part that matters most for you.
The son says something quite hard. About years of service, about a goat he never got, about the brother he refuses to call his brother.
The father does not defend himself. He says son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. That is it. No case, no argument, no persuasion.
You have permission to answer a refusal with something other than a case, and a man who did not argue has never once been a man who gave up. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the persuading out of a father's hands, and it is written in Luke 15 that he came out and spoke about what was already true rather than about what should happen next.
And the story ends there. We are never told whether the older son went in.
That is not a gap in the text. It is the point. The father's part was to go out and speak, and the going in was never his to produce.
You are able to do the whole of your part tonight, and an outcome you cannot see has never once been the measure of whether a father did his. It is written that therefore came his father out and intreated him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man finish his own job without knowing the ending.
Ask once, in a room she goes through
Here is the practical shape, and it has two halves that work together.
Play with whoever will. And do it in a room she passes through.
Not upstairs, not in a back room, not somewhere she would have to make a decision to enter. Somewhere she walks past on the way to something else.
You are able to be present without being an invitation, and a room somebody walks through has never once been a room they had to be asked into. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in an ordinary room with the door open, and Luke 15:28 has a father go out to where the son already was.
And ask once. Once, lightly, exactly as you have been doing, and then not again that evening.
The asking is not wrong and I am not going to tell you to stop. What matters is the number, because a second ask changes an offer into a campaign, and a fifteen year old can feel the difference before the sentence is finished.
You have been doing the right thing and needing an answer to it, and one light ask has never once been too little to be an open door. The Spirit of God is the one who separates an offer from a campaign, and it is written that the father came out and spoke and did not stand in the yard repeating himself.
And then be visibly enjoying yourself with whoever did sit down.
That is not a tactic and it is not bait. It is the thing itself: two people in one room having twenty ordinary minutes, and the thing on the table is only the excuse for it.
You are able to have a real evening with the people who came, and an hour that did not need her has never once been an hour that shut her out. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a room that is complete without everybody, and Luke 15 has a feast going on inside while a father is out in the yard.
What a no is allowed to cost
Now the part that is actually about you, and it is why this keeps happening.
The look costs you more than the no does. And the reason it costs is that somewhere in the asking there is a question that has nothing to do with a game.
The question is whether she still wants anything to do with you. And a fifteen year old cannot answer that question, does not know it is being asked, and would be horrified to learn that her no was carrying it.
You are able to ask for twenty minutes without asking for anything else, and an offer with nothing riding on it has never once been a refusable thing. The Spirit of God is the one who separates two questions inside a man, and Luke 15:28 has a father come out with something to say rather than something to find out.
So put the big question somewhere else. It has an answer and the answer is not in her mouth.
Whatever she says about a Tuesday evening is information about a Tuesday evening. It is not a report on the relationship and it never was.
You have a relationship that is not being voted on nightly, and a fifteen year old's no has never once been a verdict on her father. It is written that the father said thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who settles what a man is standing on before he asks anybody anything.
And then keep asking, next week, at the same weight.
You are able to hold a door open for years without it costing you, and a door held open has never once been the same thing as a man waiting to be let in. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in an offer made lightly for the fortieth time, and it is written in Luke 15 that the father went out and never once stopped being her father.
So this is what I believe is going out over a man who got a look on a Tuesday.
You are a father who can keep asking, and a no tonight has never once been the closing of a door that only you were holding open. I am not telling you she sits down. Luke 15:28 says therefore came his father out, and intreated him, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who has kept you running that sentence back for a week.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have already done the part that was yours, and a story that never tells us whether he went in has never once been a story about a father who failed. Scripture stops before the outcome on purpose, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a man finish his own job without seeing the end of it.
Ask once. Play with whoever will. Leave the door where it is.
Declare this over yourself
- Look I got on Tuesday, you are fifteen years old and you were never once a message about her father. Luke 15:28 says therefore came his father out, so by the Holy Spirit I ask once tonight and let it go, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that she is finished with me, you have never once been a question she was asked. The written word has a father speak about what is already true rather than argue, and by the Spirit of God I put that question down before I open my mouth.
- Father, You came out to a son who would not come in and You never dragged him anywhere. Your word says it in Luke 15, so by Your Spirit I hold a door open and stand somewhere else.
Luke 15:28
