One Hour TogetherPsalm 84:10

He Stays By The Door The Whole Time

This message is for the parent whose teenager comes to the room and stands at the edge of it, who cannot tell whether standing there counts as coming

He comes in every time and he never sits down.

That is the pattern and you have been watching it for months. Whatever is happening in that room, he appears about ten minutes in, stands somewhere near the door with his shoulder against the frame, and watches.

Sometimes he says something about what is going on. Sometimes he laughs at something. Once he corrected somebody about a rule and was right.

And then at some point he goes, and you never see him decide to go.

You have not mentioned it. You have wanted to about forty times. There is a sentence sitting in you that goes something like come and sit down, we would love you to join in, and you have swallowed it every week without being sure why.

Swallowing it was right, and I want to tell you why, because knowing why will make it possible to keep doing.

That doorway is not a refusal. It is an arrival, and it is the only kind currently available, and mentioning it is the one thing that could end it.

I had rather be a doorkeeper

There is a line in the psalms about a doorway that is usually read as humility and is really about wanting to be near something.

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. (Psalm 84:10, King James Version)

The man writing that is not describing second best. He is describing a preference.

He would rather be at the door of that house than fully inside anywhere else, and the doorway is named specifically and chosen deliberately.

You are a parent whose son keeps arriving, and a person standing at the edge of a room has never once been a person who stayed away. Psalm 84:10 has a doorway chosen on purpose by somebody who wanted to be near something, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can turn a parent's reading of a shoulder against a frame completely around.

And notice the arithmetic in the first half, because it is generous and it is exact.

A day in thy courts is better than a thousand. He is not saying the doorway is nearly as good. He is saying that proximity to the thing he loves outweighs full possession of anything else.

You have somebody choosing your room over everywhere else in the house, and eleven minutes at a doorway have never once been eleven minutes of somebody keeping away. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a young person's body accurately for a parent, and it is written in Psalm 84 that the doorway was the position preferred rather than the position accepted.

So the question you have been asking, which is how do I get him to sit down, is the wrong question.

He is already there. He has come to the room, every week, without being asked, and stayed for eleven minutes, and laughed at things.

You are able to receive what has already been given, and a person who keeps turning up has never once been a person who has to be persuaded. It is written that a day in the courts is better than a thousand elsewhere, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a parent what is actually happening in their own doorway.

Why mentioning it would end it

Now the mechanism, because it explains the instinct that has kept you quiet.

The doorway works precisely because nothing is being asked of him there. He can arrive without committing, watch without joining, and leave without explaining.

That freedom is the entire reason he comes, and one sentence removes all three of those at once.

You are able to protect something by saying nothing, and a swallowed sentence has never once been a smaller act of love than a spoken one. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a good sentence in somebody's mouth, and Psalm 84:10 has a doorway that nobody in the verse is being called out of.

Say come and sit down, and here is what happens next.

Now standing there is a position with a name on it. Now it is being noticed and discussed. Now every future appearance in that doorway is a decision about whether to accept an invitation, and a fourteen year old will simply stop appearing rather than have to answer that weekly.

You have something working that nobody has to know about, and a thing that was never named has never once needed naming to be real. It is written that a day in thy courts is better than a thousand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets an arrangement stay unspoken.

And this is not a technique for getting him to the table eventually. I want to be honest about that.

He may sit down in three weeks. He may stand in that doorway for two years. Both of those are him being in the room with his family, and one is not a failed version of the other.

You are able to let this be the whole thing rather than a stage on the way to something, and standing in a room with people has never once been a lesser way of being with them. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody at the edge of a room as fully as with anybody in a chair, and Scripture puts a doorkeeper inside the house.

Leave the doorway alone

Here is the instruction, and it is a set of things not to do.

Say nothing at all about where he is standing. Leave the doorway entirely alone.

Do not invite him in. Do not make room. Do not pull out a chair, do not shift along, and do not look up expectantly when he appears.

You are able to leave a door open by never mentioning it, and a doorway nobody discussed has never once been a doorway anybody had to defend. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a room where nothing was asked of anybody, and Psalm 84:10 names the doorkeeper as somebody already in the house of God.

And do one thing rather than nothing, which is the positive half.

Talk to him where he is. If he says something about what is happening, answer it exactly as you would answer somebody sitting at the table. Same voice, same length, no extra warmth.

Extra warmth is a message, and the message is I noticed you came, which is the thing you are trying not to say.

You have a way to include somebody without inviting them, and an ordinary answer has never once been a colder thing than a warm welcome. The Spirit of God is the one who works through something completely level, and it is written in Psalm 84 that the doorway was a place inside the house rather than outside it.

And if he sits down one week, say nothing about that either.

You are able to let somebody move without remarking on it, and a chair taken quietly has never once needed anybody to notice out loud. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a room where nothing is being tracked, and Psalm 84:10 has a man content at a door in the house he loves.

The breakthrough

So this is what I believe is going out over somebody who has swallowed the same sentence forty times.

You are a parent whose son keeps arriving, and a person standing at the edge of a room has never once been a person who stayed away. I am not telling you he takes a chair. Psalm 84:10 says I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who has kept that sentence in your mouth for months.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been reading an arrival as a refusal, and a boy who chose that doorway has never once been a boy who was not with his family. Scripture names the doorway as a place chosen rather than settled for, and the Spirit of God is the one who is at the edge of a room as fully as at the middle of a table.

He came. He comes every week. That is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence about coming and sitting down, you are warm and you were never once the thing that would keep him coming. Psalm 84:10 says I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, so by the Holy Spirit I swallow you again tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that standing at the edge means he is not really with us, you have never once counted the weeks he has turned up. The written word puts a doorkeeper inside the house and calls it better than a thousand days, and by the Spirit of God I leave that doorway completely alone.
  3. Father, You had a man say he would rather stand at a door in Your house than live anywhere else. Your word says it in Psalm 84, so by Your Spirit I receive an arrival that I have been reading as a refusal.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
