I Give The Twenty Minutes To The Tidying

The counter gets them. Every single night.

There is a window most evenings, somewhere between the meal being over and everybody going up, of about twenty five minutes where nothing has to happen.

And every night it goes on the kitchen, and by the time the kitchen is done the window has closed and everybody has gone.

You are not doing anything wrong and nobody could accuse you of anything. The kitchen has to be done. It genuinely does. Nobody else is going to do it and you would not be able to sleep with it like that anyway.

Here is the only thing I want to put in front of you, and it is not about doing less.

It is about the order.

The kitchen gets the good twenty minutes, the ones when everybody is still about and nobody has gone up. The table gets whatever is left, which is nothing, because there is nothing left after the kitchen.

You have not been choosing between them. You have been spending them in an order you never chose.

She of her want did cast in all she had

There is a moment in Mark where Jesus watches people put money in and says something about arithmetic that changes what counting means.

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. (Mark 12:44, King James Version)

The measure is not the amount. That is the whole point of the passage and everybody knows it.

But look at the specific thing being praised, because it is more precise than generosity.

She gave out of her want rather than out of what was left over after her needs were met. The others gave from abundance, which means from the surplus, which means after everything necessary had been covered.

You are a woman who can spend the good twenty rather than the last one, and a counter that waited has never once cost this household anything. Mark 12:44 distinguishes giving from the surplus from giving from the need itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can put that in front of a woman without any suggestion that she has been ungenerous.

And nothing in that passage says the others were wrong.

They gave. It counted. Their gifts went in the box. The distinction is not between good and bad, it is between two kinds of giving, and only one of them costs anything.

You have been giving from what is left, and a gift out of the surplus has never once been a smaller gift than one that cost something. The Spirit of God is the one who names a distinction without condemning anybody on either side of it, and it is written in Mark 12 that all of them cast in.

And here is the translation to your kitchen.

Twenty minutes given after the counter is clear is given out of abundance. Twenty minutes given while the counter is still stacked is given out of want.

Both are twenty minutes. Only one of them is felt.

You are able to give something that costs you, and twenty minutes taken while a job is still undone have never once been irresponsible. It is written that she of her want did cast in all that she had, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman which twenty minutes is which.

The counter will wait

Now the practical objection, because it is real and I am not going to wave it away.

If you sit down at half past eight with a stacked counter, the counter is still stacked at ten past nine.

That is true. And it takes eleven minutes at ten past nine, and it has taken eleven minutes at ten past nine every night for years, and it does not get worse for having waited.

You have a job that does not deteriorate, and a counter left for forty minutes has never once been a harder counter to clear. The Spirit of God is the one who checks a fear against the facts, and Mark 12:44 has a woman give before her own needs were covered rather than after.

And there is the thing that has actually been driving this, which is worth naming.

Sitting down with a stacked counter is uncomfortable in a way that has nothing to do with the kitchen. It is the discomfort of a job undone, and it sits on a woman the whole time she is at the table.

That discomfort is the cost. It is exactly what the widow's two mites cost her, and it is why the twenty minutes counts differently.

You are able to sit through the discomfort of an undone job, and twenty minutes with a counter behind you have never once been twenty minutes stolen from anybody. It is written in Mark 12 that the giving out of want was what got noticed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a woman at a table who can see the state of her own kitchen.

And the people at the table do not know the counter is there.

They see their mother sitting down at half past eight, which they have not seen in about a year, and none of them will ever know what it cost, and that is fine and it is how this works.

You have something to give that only shows in the order it is given in, and a household has never once needed to be told what an evening cost. The Spirit of God is the one who receives something nobody else at the table can see, and Scripture records a gift that only one person in the crowd noticed.

First twenty to the table

Here is the instruction, and it is entirely about sequence.

Give the first twenty minutes to the table tonight, and the last twenty to the counter.

Same two jobs. Same total time. Reverse the order and nothing else.

You are able to change an evening by changing nothing except the order, and two jobs done in a different sequence have never once been more work. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something rearranged rather than added, and Mark 12:44 puts the whole distinction on what was given from rather than on how much.

And do it at the moment the meal is over, before anybody has moved.

That is the window. It is about ninety seconds wide, and if it closes everybody scatters and there is no table to sit at, only a kitchen.

You have a window ninety seconds wide most nights, and a moment taken at the right time has never once needed anybody to be called back. The Spirit of God is the one who works in something taken immediately, and it is written that she cast in what she had rather than what remained.

And put nothing away first. Not one plate.

You are able to leave everything exactly where it is for twenty minutes, and a stacked counter has never once been an accusation against anybody at that table. It is written in Mark 12 that she gave all her living and nobody in the crowd noticed except one, and the Spirit of God is the one at work at a table in an unfinished kitchen.
