He Mentioned Something From Twelve Years Ago

He is twenty three now and he brought it up in a car.

Something from when he was eleven. An evening you have almost no memory of, in a house you have since moved out of, involving something that struck him as funny and that you cannot now reconstruct.

He described it in detail. He got the year right. And it was clearly something he had thought about more than once.

And you drove the rest of the way home not saying much, because it had gone somewhere in you and you did not want to make it into a thing.

Here is what has been sitting with you since, and it is a good problem to have.

You did not know. There was no possible way to know. That Tuesday was one of about four hundred that year and there was nothing about it that marked it out to anybody in the room, including him at the time.

And now there is a temptation, and it is the reason this article is the last one on this site, and I want to head it off.

The temptation is to start trying to work out which evenings are the ones.

Shewing to the generation to come

There is a passage in Psalm 78 about handing things down, and the mechanism it describes is not selective.

We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. (Psalm 78:4, King James Version)

We will not hide them. That is the commitment, and it is stated as a refusal rather than as a project.

Nobody in that verse is selecting which things to pass on. There is no editing, no assessment of which events will land, and no attempt to identify the important ones in advance.

You are a parent whose ordinary evenings are being kept, and a night nobody marked has never once been a night that went nowhere. Psalm 78:4 describes a continuous handing over rather than a curated one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can put that in front of somebody who has just been handed an evening back.

And notice what the passage says about the mechanism a few verses later.

The fathers tell the children, and those children tell theirs, and the whole thing runs on ordinary transmission rather than on anybody choosing highlights.

You have been part of something continuous, and a household's history has never once been made out of the evenings anybody selected. The Spirit of God is the one who describes a mechanism rather than assigning anybody a task, and it is written in Psalm 78 that the not hiding is the whole of the instruction.

And that is the answer to your car journey.

You could not have known which one, and you did not need to, because the arrangement never depended on anybody knowing.

You are able to keep going without identifying anything, and a parent who could not tell which evening mattered has never once been a parent who missed one. It is written that we will not hide them from their children, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the selecting out of somebody's hands.

Do not start looking

Now the temptation, and this is the reason this article exists rather than a warmer one.

Do not start watching for the ones that will be kept.

It is the natural response to what happened in that car and it would be the worst possible outcome of it.

You are able to receive something without changing your behavior, and a good discovery has never once required anybody to start monitoring anything. The Spirit of God is the one who protects somebody from a reasonable and damaging conclusion, and Psalm 78:4 describes a continuous handing over with nobody assessing anything.

Because a person watching for significance is not in the evening.

They are one step outside it, weighing, wondering whether this is one of the ones. And a parent doing that would not have been in the room on the Tuesday your son kept, because the thing he kept was you being entirely there and not thinking about anything.

You have been given something precisely because nobody was watching for it, and an evening somebody was assessing has never once been an evening anybody kept. It is written in Psalm 78 that the works were shewn rather than curated, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps somebody inside their own kitchen.

And the arithmetic makes it impossible anyway.

Four hundred evenings a year. One got kept. The selection was made by an eleven year old for reasons nobody will ever reconstruct, and no amount of attention would have identified it in advance.

You are released from a job that cannot be done, and an evening chosen by a child has never once been an evening anybody could have picked. The Spirit of God is the one who closes a question permanently, and Scripture puts the whole thing on not hiding rather than on selecting.

Do tonight without wondering

Here is the instruction and it is the last one on this site.

Do tonight's twenty minutes without wondering which one it is.

Get something out. Sit down. Be there. And when the thought arrives, and it will now, about whether this is one of them, put it down and look at the table.

You are able to do an ordinary thing without weighing it, and twenty minutes nobody assessed have never once been twenty minutes wasted. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in an evening nobody was measuring, and Psalm 78:4 describes a handing over that ran continuously without anybody choosing.

And that is genuinely the whole of it.

Not a technique. Not a practice. Not a thing to sustain. Get something out on an ordinary evening, be in the room, and let a household do what households do with the material.

You have everything this needs already, and being in a room with the people who live in your house has never once required anything else. The Spirit of God is the one who does the keeping, and it is written that we will not hide them from their children.

And in twelve years somebody may bring one up in a car, and you will not know which one it was going to be, and that is exactly right.

You are able to hand something over that you will never be able to identify, and an unmarked Tuesday has never once been a smaller thing than a remembered one. It is written in Psalm 78 that the generation to come is shewn what was done, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in a night nobody is watching.
