Somebody told it again on Sunday and he was six when it happened.
He does the voices now. He has added a part that was not in it originally and everybody lets him, because his version is better than what occurred and has been for about two years.
Four years ago. A Tuesday, you think. Nothing was going on.
And here is what got you, sitting at the end of the table while he told it: you cannot remember that evening.
Not really. You remember the story, because you have heard it forty times. But the actual evening is gone. You were there. You are in the story. And there is no independent memory of the night at all.
Which means it was completely ordinary and nobody had any idea what was happening.
I want to say very plainly what this is not going to do, because this is the last article on this site and it would be easy to end badly.
It is not going to make you anxious about time.
There is a version of this that says pay attention, because you never know which evening becomes the one. It sounds wise. What it produces is a mother standing slightly outside her own family, monitoring, and a person doing that is not in the room at all.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter
There is a psalm about people coming home, and what it reports about them is the sound they made.
When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. (Psalm 126:1-2, King James Version)
Something enormous has happened. A whole people have come back from exile.
And the evidence offered for it is not a treaty or a census or a rebuilt wall. It is laughter, and singing, and a group of people who felt like they were dreaming.
You are a mother inside something being made, and an evening you cannot remember has never once been an evening you were absent from. Psalm 126:2 records laughter as the report of something enormous rather than as a decoration on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand a woman that on an ordinary Tuesday.
And notice the phrase like them that dream, because it is exactly what you have described.
They were inside the biggest thing that had happened to them and it did not feel like a historic occasion. It felt unreal, ordinary, hard to hold onto.
You have been inside something without being able to feel the size of it, and a night that felt like nothing has never once been a night where nothing happened. The Spirit of God is the one who names a condition rather than correcting it, and it is written in Psalm 126 that they were like them that dream.
So not being able to remember that Tuesday is not a failure of attention.
It is what being inside a thing feels like, and it is the same for everybody, and it was the same for a whole nation coming home.
You are able to be in something you cannot feel the weight of, and being unable to identify the important evening has never once meant somebody missed it. It is written that then was our mouth filled with laughter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman she was in the room.
Do not monitor it
Now the thing I want to protect you from, and it is the whole reason this article exists.
Do not start watching for the important ones.
A person who is monitoring an evening for significance is not in the evening. They are one step outside it, assessing, and that step outside is exactly what would have cost you the Tuesday four years ago if you had taken it.
You are able to be in a room rather than beside it, and a mother inside an ordinary evening has never once been a mother missing anything. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps somebody from stepping outside their own kitchen, and Psalm 126:2 records the laughter from inside it rather than from a vantage point.
And the arithmetic is worth having, because it settles this permanently.
You cannot tell which evening it is. Nobody can. The one that became the story was a Tuesday when nothing was going on, and it was chosen by a six year old for reasons nobody could have predicted.
Which means there is no version of paying attention that would have helped, and there is therefore nothing to feel about it.
You have been let off something entirely, and an evening nobody could have identified has never once been an evening anybody failed to notice. It is written in Psalm 126 that they were like them that dream, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a whole category of worry off a woman at a table.
So the only thing available is to be in tonight. That is all there ever was.
You are able to do the only thing anybody can do, and being present at an ordinary evening has never once been a smaller act than watching for a significant one. The Spirit of God is the one at work in a Tuesday that nobody marked, and Scripture puts the laughter in the mouths of people who were inside it.
Say one thing out loud
Here is the instruction, and it is the last one on this site, and it is small on purpose.
Say out loud, at the table, one thing from tonight you want to remember.
Not a summary. Not a speech about how nice this was. One thing that happened, named, out loud, while everybody is still sitting there.
You are able to name one thing while it is still in the room, and one sentence said at a table has never once been a heavy thing to say. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something named out loud, and Psalm 126:2 has a people report what happened to them in their own mouths.
And here is what saying it does, which is not what you would expect.
It does not preserve the evening. You will probably still not remember it in four years, and that is fine.
What it does is put a marker down in front of the people who are there, and one of them will pick it up, because a thing named out loud by a mother is a thing a household starts telling.
You have a way to hand somebody a story without making anything of it, and one named moment has never once needed to be important to be kept. The Spirit of God is the one who works through something said in an ordinary voice, and it is written that their tongue was filled with singing.
And say it lightly, which is the whole of the craft in it.
I liked it when that happened. That is the level. Not this is a memory we are making, which would put a weight on tonight that no Tuesday can carry.
You are able to mark something without making it an occasion, and a light sentence has never once turned an evening into an event. It is written in Psalm 126 that the laughter came first and the telling among the nations came after, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in an ordinary sentence at a full table.
So this is what I believe is going out over a woman at the end of a table listening to a story she is in.
You are a mother inside something being made, and an evening you cannot remember has never once been an evening you were absent from. I am not going to make you watch for the important ones. Psalm 126:2 says then was our mouth filled with laughter, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who has kept a Tuesday from four years ago in front of you all week.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been in the room the whole time, and a household that tells a story about a night you cannot recall has never once been telling it about somebody who was somewhere else. Scripture records people inside the biggest thing that ever happened to them feeling like they were dreaming, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in a Tuesday that nobody could have picked.
Be in tonight. That is the whole of it and it always was.
Declare this over yourself
- Tuesday from four years ago that I cannot remember, you are ordinary and you were never once an evening I was absent from. Psalm 126:2 says then was our mouth filled with laughter, so by the Holy Spirit I name one thing tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that I am missing the ones that matter, you have never once been able to identify one in advance. The written word has a whole people inside their own homecoming feeling like them that dream, and by the Spirit of God I stay inside tonight instead of watching it.
- Father, You took the laughter of people coming home as the report of what You had done. Your word says it in Psalm 126, so by Your Spirit I say one light sentence at my own table tonight.
Psalm 126:2
