At some point you retired the whole idea.
Not out loud. There was no evening where you announced that the household had outgrown this. There was a slow accumulation of small readings, and out of it came a conclusion that now feels like a fact: they are past this now.
Ask yourself when that became true. Try to find the month.
You cannot, and the reason you cannot is that it never happened. Nobody in your house said it. Nobody asked you to file it. You made a ruling on behalf of other people and then stopped putting it to them.
That is not a moral failure and I am not building toward telling you it is. It is a mistake of the kind everybody makes about the people they live with, which is that we keep an old picture and stop taking new ones.
The oldest is fourteen now, or seventeen, or twenty two. The picture in your head of what she thinks is ridiculous is about four years out of date, and four years is a long time in a person.
Except ye become as little children
There is a scene where the disciples ask a status question and Jesus answers it by moving a child into the middle of the room.
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3, King James Version)
Whatever else that verse is doing, notice the direction of travel in it.
The disciples assume that maturity moves in one direction and that arriving somewhere means leaving something behind. Jesus puts the childlikeness at the destination rather than at the start.
Which is a strange thing for the kingdom and a very useful thing for a household, because it means the capacity for play is not a stage anybody grows out of. It is something a person can be called back into at any age, including a person of seventeen, and including you.
You are a man who made a ruling nobody asked him for, and a decision made silently has never once been a decision that cannot be undone silently. Matthew 18:3 puts becoming as a little child at the end of the road rather than at the beginning of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unpicks an assumption a man has been treating as a fact.
Look at who Jesus is talking to, as well. Grown men. Arguing about rank.
He does not tell them to remember their childhoods fondly. He tells them the thing they think they have graduated from is the thing they have to be converted back into.
You have not been disqualified by anybody's age, and a seventeen year old has never once been past the reach of an ordinary hour at a table. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a man off a conclusion he never examined, and it is written in Matthew 18 that the childlike is where the kingdom keeps its entrance.
So the question is no longer whether they are past it. The question is who decided, and the answer to that is uncomfortable and entirely fixable.
Find out instead of ruling
Here is the correction, and it is smaller than the mistake.
Stop deciding. Find out.
This household has been running on a piece of information nobody has checked in four years, and the check costs one evening and requires nobody to have a conversation about it.
Put the thing out. See what happens. That is the whole experiment, and unlike your ruling, it produces actual data.
You are able to replace a guess with a fact tonight, and finding out has never once cost a man more than assuming did. It is written in Matthew 18 that the way into the kingdom runs through becoming as a little child, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man the nerve to test something he was sure about.
And here is the important half: no is a real answer and it is not a bad one.
If they walk past, that is something true learned, which is more than the morning had in it. Nothing about it is a rejection. It is a test, and a test that returns a no is a successful test.
That reframing matters more than it looks, because the reason you stopped putting it out was almost certainly not tiredness. It was that you were protecting yourself from a specific expression on a specific face.
You have permission to be turned down without it meaning anything about you, and a shrug from a teenager has never once been a ruling on the man who made the offer. Scripture puts the childlike in the middle of the room by the hand of Jesus rather than by anybody's willingness, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a father steady while a room decides.
The thing they are actually past
Now, there is a version of your conclusion that is true, and it is worth separating out so the rest can go.
They probably are past being managed into an evening. They are past being organized, cheered along, and asked afterward whether they had a good time. All of that is genuinely finished and it should be.
What they are not past is being in a room with people who like them, doing something that gives everybody a reason to stay in a chair.
You are still wanted in a room by people who would never say so out loud, and a household that stopped playing has never once been a household that stopped wanting company. It is written in Matthew 18 that the childlike is where the kingdom keeps its door, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a man which half of his conclusion to keep.
Nobody grows out of that. Nobody has ever grown out of that. Adults pay money to arrange it for themselves.
You are still holding something that no age has ever made obsolete, and a household in one room has never once been a childish thing to want. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates what a family has outgrown from what it has only stopped doing, and Matthew 18:3 is the verse where the childlike turns out to be the destination.
So drop the managing and keep the offer. That is the whole adjustment.
You have the harder half already, and a man who stopped organizing has never once been a man with nothing left to give. It is written that the kingdom belongs to the childlike, which is a permanent category and not an age bracket, and the Spirit of God is the one who is at work in a room where nobody was cheered along.
So this is what I believe is going out over a man who filed a ruling nobody appealed.
You are a man who made a ruling nobody asked him for, and a decision made silently has never once been a decision that cannot be undone silently. I am not telling you they will sit down. Matthew 18:3 says except ye become as little children, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is quietly taking a four year old conclusion out of your hands.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have not lost the years you thought you lost, and an assumption has never once been the same thing as a fact about your own children. Scripture makes the childlike a destination rather than a phase, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a man find out something he was sure he already knew.
Nobody told you they were done. So nobody has to be convinced.
Declare this over yourself
- Ruling that they are past this, you are four years old and you were never once put to the people you were about. Matthew 18:3 says except ye become as little children, so by the Holy Spirit I set it out tonight and find out, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of the look on her face, you have never once been a verdict on the man who made the offer. The written word puts a child in the middle of the room by the hand of Jesus, and by the Spirit of God I sit down and start alone if I have to.
- Father, You made the childlike the destination and not the stage anybody leaves. Your word says it in Matthew 18, so by Your Spirit I stop deciding on behalf of my own children and let the room answer.
