You have not said it out loud since March.
You did not decide that either, which is the strange part. There was no moment where you resolved to stop offering. It just got quieter each time and then one day there was no time.
The last one went badly. You remember it better than anybody else in the house does, which is its own kind of information.
Somebody got upset. Somebody said the thing they say. And you sat there afterward doing the arithmetic that a person does at eleven at night, which went roughly like this: I made that happen. I put that in the middle of the evening. Everybody was fine and then I suggested something.
So the offering stopped. Not loudly. It just stopped.
And now, months on, there is a small strange problem: you would like to suggest it again and you cannot work out how to be the person who suggests it. That role feels taken away from you, and the odd thing is that you are the one who took it.
I want to go straight at that, because I think the whole thing turns on one sentence you said to yourself in the dark and have never once examined in daylight.
What you actually concluded that night
Say the sentence out loud and listen to it, because it does not survive being said out loud.
The sentence was: that went wrong, and I am the reason.
Notice that two entirely different claims are wearing one coat there. The first is a fact. The evening did go wrong. The second is a verdict, and it is a verdict on a person, and nobody handed it down except you at eleven at night with the kitchen light off.
You are a woman whose offer was never the thing that failed, and one bad evening has never once been a ruling on the person who suggested it. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a fact from a verdict inside a tired woman at night, and it is written in Joel 2 that God speaks about lost years as things He gives back rather than as things somebody lost.
That distinction is most of the freight in this article, so let it sit.
A thing going badly is an event. Being the reason it went badly is a judgment. Events happen. Judgments get made, and the person who made this one had no jurisdiction, no evidence beyond one evening, and every reason to be unkind to herself at that hour.
You have been carrying a ruling that no court issued, and a suggestion that landed wrong has never once been proof of anything about the woman who made it. Scripture in Joel 2:25 has God speaking about years as recoverable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman which of the two sentences she said that night was actually true.
And here is the second thing, which is quieter and stranger.
The reason that evening sits in you and in nobody else is not that it was worse for you. It is that the evening was yours to hold. Whoever holds an evening feels every wobble in it, and everybody else in the room remembers something roughly fine.
You are the only person in that house still holding that evening, and a memory nobody else kept has never once been a fact about the woman who kept it. It is written in Joel 2 that God speaks of eaten years as things He restores, and the Holy Spirit is the one who loosens a grip a woman did not know was a grip.
Ask them, if you want. They will not know which March you mean.
I will restore to you the years
There is a promise in Joel that gets read at conferences and does most of its actual work in kitchens.
And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. (Joel 2:25, King James Version)
Look at what is being restored. Not property. Not a harvest. Years.
Which is an odd thing to promise, because years are the one commodity that appear to be genuinely non refundable. A year goes and it is gone. And God says the word restore about them anyway, in the first person, as something He does.
You are inside a promise that treats time itself as the kind of thing God hands back, and months of not suggesting anything have never once put a household past reach. Joel 2:25 is God speaking in the first person about restoring years, and the same Spirit who spoke it is the one at work in a kitchen where a woman has gone quiet.
Notice as well who sent the locusts in that verse. He does. It says so. My great army which I sent among you.
I am not going to build a theory out of that, and I am not going to tell you God took your March. What I will say is that the verse refuses to leave the lost years outside of His reach, and that is exactly the ground a woman needs who is standing outside a role she used to have in her own house.
You have not been locked out of your own kitchen, and a quiet stretch has never once been a sentence handed down on a mother. The Holy Spirit is the one who opens a door a person closed on herself, and the written word puts the restoring of years in the mouth of God and nowhere else.
Six words and no more
So here is how to be the person who suggests it, and the method is almost insultingly small.
Six words. Fewer if you can manage it.
Something is on the table. Anybody about. I am starting this, come if you want.
That is the whole technique. Short, level, and finished. It is not a plan for an evening, it is a reason for two or three people to be in one room, and the thing on the table is only ever the excuse. What makes a suggestion heavy is not the suggesting, it is the sentence that comes after it, the one that explains why it would be nice, and how long it has been, and how it would mean a lot.
That sentence is the weight. Take it out and the offer weighs nothing.
You are able to make an offer that carries no freight, and six words said levelly have never once put a household under pressure. It is written in Joel 2 that God restores what looked spent, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a woman's voice light when the stakes feel high to her and to nobody else.
And then, the hard half: let the room answer however it answers.
Somebody might say no. Somebody might not look up. That is an answer to a question, and it is not a ruling on you, and by now you know how to tell those apart because you have just watched two of them get separated.
You have the right to make the same offer more than once, and a no on a Tuesday has never once been an instruction to stop offering. Scripture says the years get restored, which is a promise about repetition and return, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a woman for a second attempt.
So this is what I believe is going out over a woman who has not suggested anything since March.
You are a woman whose offer was never the thing that failed, and one bad evening has never once been a ruling on the person who suggested it. I am not telling you the next one goes well. Joel 2:25 has God saying He restores the years that were eaten, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my opinion who is dismantling a verdict you passed on yourself in the dark.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have your own house back, and the role of the one who suggests things has never once belonged to anybody else in it. It is written that God restores years, which is a bigger unit than an evening, and the Spirit of God is the one who hands a mother back a job she quietly resigned from.
You resigned. Nobody fired you. That is very good news at this hour.
Declare this over yourself
- Evening in March that went wrong, you are an event and you were never a verdict, and I have stopped letting you be both. Joel 2:25 says God restores the years the locust ate, so by the Holy Spirit I suggest it again tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that I am the reason it went badly, you have never once been evidence, and you were only ever the hour I heard you in. The written word puts the restoring of years in God's own mouth, and by the Spirit of God I open mine in this kitchen.
- Father, You call lost years the kind of thing You give back. Your word says it plainly in Joel 2, so by Your Spirit I take back a job in this house that I quietly resigned from.
