We Are Not That Kind Of Family

Other people's kitchens sound different.

You noticed it years ago and you have never said it out loud. You go somewhere, and there is a particular kind of noise coming out of a room, and everybody is talking over each other, and something is going on at a table.

And you drive home and the thought arrives on its own, fully formed, with no argument attached: we are not that kind of family.

It does not come as a complaint. It comes as a fact about your household, the way a person knows what county they live in.

And you remember playing as a child. That is the part that makes this strange. You have the memory. You know what that room felt like. And somehow that never transferred, and you have quietly concluded that it was not going to.

I want to go straight at the sentence, because I think it has been doing an enormous amount of work in your house and it has never once been examined.

We are not that kind of family is not a description. It sounds like one. It is a category, and categories are permanent, and nothing about your household is permanent except the people in it.

Ask for the old paths

There is a verse in Jeremiah that is spoken to people standing at a junction with no idea which way anything goes.

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. (Jeremiah 6:16, King James Version)

Four instructions in a row, and every one of them is something a person does rather than something a person is.

Stand. See. Ask. Walk. Nobody in that verse is assigned a type.

You are standing in a household that was never assigned a type, and a description of last year has never once been a category anybody gets born into. Jeremiah 6:16 hands out four verbs and not one label, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence off a family that nobody in it ever voted for.

And look at the phrase in the middle: ask for the old paths.

There is an assumption inside it that a good way already exists and has been walked before, and that a person who has lost it can ask where it went and be told.

That is your childhood kitchen. You already know what the room felt like. That memory is not nostalgia, it is a location, and the verse says to ask for it and then walk in it.

You have already been in the room you are describing, and a person who remembers the good way has never once been a person with no directions. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an old memory usable rather than painful, and it is written in Jeremiah 6 that a lost path can be asked after and found.

Which means the sentence in the car was wrong on a point of fact, not just on a point of tone.

A description got promoted

Now let me show you how the sentence got made, because once you can see the manufacture, it loses most of its authority.

Somewhere back there, a run of things happened. A hard few years. A house with too much on. A season when nobody had anything left for a table.

That was a true description of a period of time. Entirely accurate.

You are not the kind of person the sentence claims you are, and a hard stretch has never once been evidence about what a household is made of. It is written in Jeremiah 6 that the instruction is to stand and see and ask, which are all things a family in any condition can do, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a season from an identity.

But a description that stays true long enough gets promoted. It stops describing the last two years and starts describing the family, and then it starts describing the future, and nobody ever announces the promotion.

That is the whole mechanism and it happens in every household about something.

You have been living under a ruling that was only ever a weather report, and two hard years have never once been a permanent classification. The Spirit of God is the one who demotes a sentence back down to what it actually was, and Scripture puts a whole nation at a junction with four things to do rather than a name to accept.

And notice how much easier the problem is once the sentence comes down.

If your household is a type of household, then changing anything requires becoming a different kind of family, which is enormous and slow and probably impossible.

If your household is a group of people who have had a hard couple of years, then tonight is available.

You are holding an evening that a category was hiding from you, and a hard couple of years has never once put a Tuesday out of reach. The Spirit of God is the one who hands a woman back the night in front of her, and Jeremiah 6:16 says walk therein, which is an instruction about a foot and not about an identity.

Do the thing once

So here is the move, and it is aimed exactly at the sentence.

Do the thing your family supposedly does not do. Once. Tonight. Without calling it anything.

Not a new era. Not a fresh start. Not we are going to be a family that does this now, which would put the whole weight of a category back on an ordinary Tuesday.

You are able to act outside a description without announcing a new one, and doing something once has never once required a household to become something else first. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a single ordinary evening that carries no title, and Jeremiah 6:16 says walk therein, which is a foot on a road and not a change of identity.

Because here is what one evening actually does to a sentence like that one.

It does not disprove it. It makes it inaccurate. A family that did the thing on Tuesday is no longer a family that does not do the thing, and the sentence quietly has to be reworded, and a sentence that has to be reworded has lost its authority.

You do not have to argue with it. You have to make it out of date.

You have one evening between you and an out of date sentence, and twenty minutes in one room has never once been too small to make a category wrong. The Spirit of God is the one who does something permanent with something temporary, and it is written that the good way is asked for and then walked in.

And do it with whoever is there. Two people is a household doing the thing.

You are not required to have everybody for this to count, and two people at a table have never once been a smaller family than five. It is written in Jeremiah 6 that walking in the good way brings rest to a soul, which is offered to the one walking, and the Spirit of God is the one who is at work in a room with two people in it.
