I Cannot Get The Same Hour Free

You have tried to solve this four times and it does not solve.

Six people. Six sets of commitments. Two of them working, one of them out three evenings, one who goes to bed early, one whose free time is exactly the hours everybody else is busy.

You did it properly the last time. You wrote it out. And what came back was one hour on a Sunday afternoon in three weeks, and by the time it arrived two things had moved and it was gone.

So there has been nothing for months, and the reason is not that your family is fragmented or unwilling. It is that you have been trying to solve an intersection, and the intersection is genuinely empty.

I want to say something at the start that will sound like giving up and is not.

Stop trying. The overlap is not coming. Six diaries do not converge and no amount of care will make them.

What I am going to hand you instead is a much lower requirement, and it is available roughly eleven times a week in your house right now.

From house to house, with one accord

There is a description in Acts of how a group of people actually lived together, and the details are unexpectedly domestic.

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. (Acts 2:46, King James Version)

Two settings in one sentence, and they are doing different jobs.

The temple is where everybody was. That happened, and it was real, and it is the big gathering.

And then: from house to house. Small groups. Whoever was there. Bread and a meal and gladness, in ordinary rooms, on ordinary days.

You are a mother with more hours than she thinks, and an hour that everybody can reach has never once been the only hour worth having. Acts 2:46 puts the house to house alongside the temple rather than beneath it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman a whole second category of evening.

And notice which one is described as daily.

Continuing daily. The rhythm of that life was not the big gathering, it was the small one, repeated, in whatever house had people in it that day.

You have been waiting for the temple and missing the house, and a small gathering has never once been a lesser version of a large one. The Spirit of God is the one who reorders what a person is aiming at, and it is written in Acts 2 that the breaking of bread went from house to house and happened every day.

Then the last phrase, which is the one that lands: singleness of heart.

Not divided. Not counting who was absent. Whoever was in the room was the whole event, and there is no sense anywhere in that verse of a gathering being diminished by who could not come.

You are able to have a whole evening with two people in it, and a room with four missing has never once been a room that was short of anything. It is written that they ate with gladness and singleness of heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the counting out of a woman's kitchen.

Any two of you

Here is the instruction, and the threshold is the entire point.

Two. Whenever any two people in this house are free, that is the hour, and it starts.

Not four. Not most of them. Two, including yourself, whoever the other one happens to be.

You are able to start with the smallest possible number, and two people at a table have never once needed the other four to make it count. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a room with two people in it, and Acts 2:46 describes small groups in ordinary houses as the daily thing rather than the fallback.

And this changes the arithmetic of your week completely, which is the part worth sitting with.

An hour where all six are free happens perhaps four times a year. An hour where any two people in that house are free happens most days, and by two or three different pairings.

Six people produce fifteen possible pairs. You have been waiting for the one combination that never occurs and ignoring fifteen that occur constantly.

You have been standing in the middle of a great many available hours, and a household with no common hour has never once been a household with no hours in it. The Spirit of God is the one who shows somebody what has been in front of them, and it is written that they continued daily from house to house.

And take them as they come rather than arranging them.

The moment a two person hour has to be scheduled, it joins the line with everything else and dies there. When two of you are in the kitchen at the same time with nothing on, that is the hour, and it starts within a minute.

You are able to use something the moment it appears, and an hour taken on the spot has never once been worth less than one that was arranged. It is written in Acts 2 that the thing happened daily and in houses, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in something that nobody put in a diary.

Nobody is being left out

Now the objection, and it is the real one, and it is why this has not been happening already.

It feels like leaving people out. A household where two people do something without the other four sounds like the beginning of a divided house rather than a joined one.

Look again at the verse. From house to house. Nobody in Acts is being excluded when a meal happens in a house that some of them were not in that day.

You are not dividing a household by using it, and two people eating together have never once been an exclusion of anybody who was somewhere else. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the guilt out of a partial gathering, and Acts 2:46 has the breaking of bread moving from house to house without anybody being counted absent.

And there is a practical protection, which is that it rotates on its own.

Because it runs on whoever is free rather than on a plan, everybody gets it eventually and nobody gets it always. That is fairer than any schedule you could design, and it costs nothing to administer.

You have a fairness that arranges itself, and a rotation nobody planned has never once needed a mother to keep score of it. The Holy Spirit is the one who works through what is available rather than through what is arranged, and it is written that they did it daily and with singleness of heart.

Two people. Whenever it happens. Starting this week.

You are able to begin the next time two of you are in a room, and an hour that was taken has never once been an hour anybody else lost. It is written in Acts 2 that the eating was with gladness, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in a kitchen with two people in it.
