I Put The Hour In And Worked Through It

You did the hard part and then missed the easy one.

The hard part was arranging it. Finding a slot four people could reach, writing it down, saying it once without making it heavy, resisting the urge to explain why it mattered. That is real work and most households never manage it.

Thursday at seven came. Everybody turned up.

And you sat in that room for fifty minutes with a thing in your hand, answering something that could have waited until nine, looking up at the right moments, saying the right words.

You know this because your daughter said something at about the fortieth minute and you had to ask her to say it again.

Here is the sentence that has been going round in you since: I am the only person who did not come.

I am not going to make that worse. It is already sharp enough and you have been carrying it for a week. What I am going to do is show you what the hour was actually asking for, because it was not your presence.

It was asking for the one thing you have less of than anybody in that house, and there is a reason it went to something else.

Where your treasure is

There is a sentence of Jesus about treasure and hearts that people read as a warning about money and is really a diagnostic instrument.

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:21, King James Version)

Read the direction of it, because everybody gets this backwards.

It does not say put your heart somewhere and your treasure follows. It says the heart goes to where the treasure already is.

Which makes it a test rather than a command. Look at where the resources went, and that is where the heart is, and no amount of intention alters the reading.

You are a man whose attention is the thing being asked for, and a body in a chair has never once been the same as a father in the room. Matthew 6:21 makes the placing of the treasure the thing that moves the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand a man that instrument without any condemnation attached to it.

Now, the word treasure is doing something specific and it is not only about money.

Treasure is whatever a person has a limited amount of and spends. For you, at seven in the evening on a Thursday, that is attention, and attention is scarcer in your life than money is.

You have been spending the scarcest thing you own, and a man who was in the room has never once been a man who gave anything he could not get back. The Spirit of God is the one who names what a man is actually trading, and it is written in Matthew 6 that the heart follows the treasure and not the other way round.

And here is the mercy in the verse, which is why it belongs in this article rather than a harder one.

If the heart follows the treasure, then a man who moves the treasure gets his heart moved for him. He does not have to feel differently first. He has to spend differently, once, and the feeling arrives afterward.

You are able to move something without having to feel anything first, and one hour of undivided attention has never once required a man to work up to it. It is written that where the treasure is, there the heart will be, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the moving of a heart that follows.

Why it went somewhere else

Now let me deal with what actually happened on Thursday, because it was not indifference and calling it that will get you nowhere.

An unanswered message is a small open loop, and an open loop pulls harder than a closed room. That is not a character flaw. That is how attention works in a man who has spent twenty years being reachable.

You have been pulled by something that was built to pull, and a mind that went to the open loop has never once been a mind that did not want to be there. The Spirit of God is the one who explains a man to himself without excusing anything, and Matthew 6:21 diagnoses rather than accuses.

And here is the thing about looking up at the right moments, which is the part that has been bothering you most.

A man can monitor a room well enough to perform in it. That takes real skill and it is what makes the whole thing hard to see from inside. Everything looked fine. Nobody complained. The hour happened.

The only person who knew was the man doing it, and now his daughter had to say something twice.

You are the one who noticed, and a man who caught himself has never once been a man who did not care. It is written in Matthew 6 that the heart follows where the treasure went, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man read his own Thursday accurately.

So the repair is not more effort. It is one object in another room.

You have a fix that takes nine seconds and no resolve at all, and a thing left on a kitchen counter has never once been a smaller act than a promise. The Spirit of God is the one who works through something physical, and Scripture puts the whole matter on where a thing is placed.

Put it in another room

Here is the instruction. It is physical and it is not a rule about anybody else.

Take the thing in your hand and put it in another room before the hour starts.

Not face down on the table. Not in a pocket. Another room, on a surface, with the door open if you like, but out of the room you are sitting in.

You are able to move one object nine seconds before you sit down, and putting something in another room has never once been a rule imposed on anybody else in the house. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a room where the open loops are somewhere else, and Matthew 6:21 puts the heart where the treasure was placed.

Face down on the table does not work and it is worth knowing why.

A thing on the table is still in the room, and part of a man stays with it, waiting. The waiting is the leak. Distance is what closes the loop, and eleven feet is enough distance.

You have been trying to hold two rooms at once, and a man in one room has never once had less to give than a man in two. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a man back his own attention, and it is written that the heart is where the treasure is and not where the intention is.

And say nothing about doing it. This is not an announcement and it is certainly not an example being set.

Nobody in that room needs to be told that their father has gone to get something and come back without it. They will notice the other thing, which is that he is there.

You are able to change an hour without announcing anything, and nine seconds of walking have never once needed a speech to make them count. It is written in Matthew 6 that the treasure decides the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the rest while a man sits down empty handed.
