The hour exists. That is the strange part.
You set it aside months ago. It is in the week. Everybody knows about it in a vague way and nobody would argue with it.
And it has not happened once, because every week something is more urgent than it.
One of them is in trouble about something. One of them needs a lift and there is no other slot. One of them has had a terrible week and needs an hour, and the hour is right there, and of course you give it to her.
Each of those was the right call at the time. That is what makes this so hard to see, and it is why nobody has ever raised it with you.
Here is what has happened underneath all those right calls: the hour has become a resource allocated to whoever is in the most difficulty, and the household as a whole has never once received it.
Which means the quiet ones have learned something. Not that they matter less, they would never say that. Something subtler: that the way to get an hour of their mother is to be in trouble.
I am not going to tell you to ignore a child in difficulty. That is not coming and it would be wrong.
I am going to show you that the hour was never the right currency for that, and that both things can be paid out of different accounts.
Come ye yourselves apart and rest a while
There is a moment in Mark where Jesus does something that looks almost negligent until you read what is around it.
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31, King James Version)
Read the reason given. There were many coming and going.
Not the crowd had gone home. Not the need had been met. The need was at its height, and there were more people arriving, and that is the setting in which He says come apart.
You are a mother allowed to keep something, and an hour that got given away every week has never once been an hour anybody in this house received. Mark 6:31 has Him call people away in the middle of unmet need rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can put that in front of a woman without any guilt attached to it.
And notice the phrase come ye yourselves apart, which is doing careful work.
Yourselves. It is deliberately about the ones who have been doing the giving. It is not a reward and it is not a rest earned by finishing, because nothing was finished.
You have been offered something in the middle of unfinished work, and a woman who kept an hour has never once been a woman who abandoned anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who separates keeping from neglecting, and it is written in Mark 6 that the calling apart happened while people were still coming.
And there is the detail at the end, which is almost domestic: they had no leisure so much as to eat.
The reason given is not spiritual and it is not strategic. It is that the people doing the work had not had a meal. That is the level at which He was paying attention.
You are seen at the level of an ordinary week, and a household with no hour in it has never once been beneath the notice of God. It is written that they had no leisure so much as to eat, and the Holy Spirit is the one who notices what a week has actually cost somebody.
Two accounts, not one
Now the practical structure, and it is the whole answer.
A child in real difficulty needs your attention, and that is not in question. What is in question is which hour it comes out of.
The set aside hour is the household's. The urgent thing needs a different slot, and there almost always is one, because urgency finds time when a person decides it must.
You are able to pay two things out of two accounts, and keeping one hour has never once meant refusing somebody who needed help. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman that these two were never actually competing, and Mark 6:31 has Him make room for both the crowd and the coming apart.
And be honest about what the urgent thing usually is, because this is where it turns.
Most weeks it is not an emergency. It is a difficulty, and difficulties are elastic. A conversation at nine instead of seven is the same conversation. A lift can be twenty minutes later. A hard week can be met at half past nine over a cup of tea and be met just as well.
You have more room in a week than the urgent thing lets you see, and a difficulty has never once required the one hour that was already spoken for. The Spirit of God is the one who shows the elasticity in something that felt fixed, and it is written in Mark 6 that He called them away while the coming and going continued.
And there is the thing the other children have been learning, which is the reason to change this.
If the hour always goes to trouble, then trouble is what gets an hour. Nobody in your house has worked that out consciously. It sits under everything anyway.
You are able to change what an hour rewards, and a household has never once needed a lesson said out loud to have learned it. The Holy Spirit is the one who resets what a week teaches, and Scripture puts the coming apart in the middle of the need rather than after it.
Keep it once
Here is the instruction, and it is one week.
Keep the hour this week. Whatever comes up, move that instead.
Not a new policy. Not a rule. One week, one hour, kept, with the urgent thing dealt with at a different time on the same day.
You are able to keep one hour once, and a single kept hour has never once required a woman to become somebody who says no. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in an hour that was defended once, and Mark 6:31 has the coming apart happen while everything else was still going on.
And do not explain the change to the child whose thing got moved.
Do not say this hour is for the family, so we will talk at nine. That turns a scheduling decision into a ranking, and rankings hurt.
Say we will do that at nine, and then do it at nine. Nothing more is owed.
You are able to move something without ranking anybody, and a rearranged evening has never once been a message about who matters. The Spirit of God is the one who works in a quiet rearrangement, and it is written that He said come ye yourselves apart without explaining Himself to the crowd.
Then be in the hour, with whoever is in it, for the whole of it.
You have an hour that belongs to this house, and twenty minutes in one room have never once needed the week to be calm first. It is written in Mark 6 that there were many coming and going, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in an hour kept in a week like that one.
So this is what I believe is going out over a woman whose hour keeps getting spent elsewhere.
You are a mother allowed to keep something, and an hour that got given away every week has never once been an hour anybody in this house received. I am not telling you to leave a child in difficulty. Mark 6:31 says come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is putting two accounts in front of you tonight.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have never once made a wrong call, and a run of right decisions has never once added up to a right arrangement. Scripture calls people away in the middle of unmet need and gives an ordinary reason for it, and the Spirit of God is the one who finds a woman half past nine on the same day.
Keep it once. Everything else still gets paid.
Declare this over yourself
- Hour that goes to whoever is in trouble, you are a run of right calls and you were never once an arrangement. Mark 6:31 says come ye yourselves apart and rest a while, so by the Holy Spirit I keep it this week, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that keeping it abandons somebody, you have never once looked at half past nine on the same day. The written word calls people away while the crowd is still arriving, and by the Spirit of God I name another time and keep that one too.
- Father, You called the ones doing the giving apart in the middle of the need and gave an ordinary reason for it. Your word says it in Mark 6, so by Your Spirit I keep one hour in this house this week.
