I Got Them In One Room And Nobody Talked

You got all of them into one room and then it was awful.

That is your account of it and you have told nobody, because saying it out loud would be admitting that the thing you have wanted for two years turned out to be forty minutes of nothing.

They came. All of them. That part worked.

And then there was a quiet that had a texture to it, and somebody looked at a phone, and you started producing questions, and the questions got answers about four words long, and by twenty past eight two of them had gone.

And you sat there afterward concluding that this household does not have anything to say to each other any more.

I want to challenge that conclusion, because I do not think the evening failed and I do not think the quiet meant what you read it as.

A room full of people who are not talking is not the same as a room full of people with nothing to say. Those are different rooms and they look identical from a chair.

They sat down with him upon the ground

There is a scene at the start of Job that is the best picture of company in the whole Bible, and almost nothing happens in it.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. (Job 2:13, King James Version)

Seven days. Nobody said anything.

And the text does not present that as a failure or as awkwardness. It presents it as the right thing, done by people who had come a long way specifically to do it.

You are a parent who got everybody into one room, and a quiet room has never once been the same thing as an evening that did not work. Job 2:13 records seven days of silence as the correct response of friends who had come a long way to be there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can turn a person's reading of their own Thursday completely around.

Notice what the friends are doing, because it is a physical list and it is short.

They came. They sat. They were on the ground with him and not on chairs above him. And they did not speak.

That is the whole activity, and it is one of the most highly regarded acts of friendship recorded anywhere.

You have been running an evening that Scripture would call a success, and a household sitting in one room in silence has never once been a household with nothing between them. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a room correctly for somebody who has been reading it badly, and it is written in Job 2 that the sitting and the not speaking were what they came for.

And here is the thing that will actually free you, which is about what happened next in that room.

The friends were fine for seven days. It went wrong the moment they started talking, and the rest of that book is God dealing with what they said.

You are able to let a silence stand, and the quiet in that room has never once been the part that needed fixing. It is written that none spake a word unto him, which is recorded with approval, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps somebody from filling a room that did not need filling.

What the questions were doing

Now let me deal with the questions, gently, because they came from a good place and they did the damage.

A room goes quiet. The person who arranged the room feels the quiet as a verdict on the arranging. So they start producing conversation, and the conversation is not really conversation, it is a rescue.

You were not making conversation, and questions asked into a silence have never once been the same thing as talking to somebody. The Spirit of God is the one who shows the difference between company and hosting, and Job 2:13 has four people sitting for a week without producing a single question between them.

And a teenager can tell the difference immediately, which is why the answers were four words long.

An ordinary question gets an ordinary answer. A question that is trying to prove the evening is working gets a short one, because nobody wants to be the material for somebody else's evening.

You have people who would rather sit quietly with you than perform for you, and a four word answer has never once been a refusal. It is written in Job 2 that they saw his grief and said nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop working a room they are already in.

So the second attempt does not need better questions. It needs none.

You are able to sit in a room and let it be quiet, and twenty minutes of company have never once required anybody to say anything. The Spirit of God is the one at work in a room with nothing being produced in it, and Scripture puts seven silent days on the record as friendship.

Put something on the table

One practical thing, and it is what makes the silence comfortable rather than heavy.

Put something on the table. Not to talk about, and not as an activity to be enjoyed. As somewhere for eyes to go.

Most of what makes a quiet room unbearable is that everybody is visible and there is nowhere to look. An object solves that in one move, and then the silence stops being a subject.

You are able to make a quiet room easy with one object, and something on a table has never once been the point of the evening it made possible. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in an ordinary room with an ordinary thing in the middle of it, and Job 2:13 has four men on the ground with nothing to look at but the one they came for.

And then let people talk when they talk, which they will, in about eleven minutes.

Silence in a room with something in the middle of it does not stay silent. It breaks on its own, sideways, about something unrelated, and the thing that gets said in the fourteenth minute is usually worth more than any answer to any question you were going to ask.

You have never once needed to start it, and a conversation that arrived on its own has never once been a conversation that had to be produced. The Spirit of God is the one who fills a room nobody was managing, and it is written that the friends sat and waited without a word.

Get them in the room. Let it be quiet. Do not rescue it.

You are able to do the same evening again with one thing removed, and a household in one room has never once needed talking to be together. It is written in Job 2 that they sat down with him upon the ground, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in a room where nobody is being asked anything.
