Only One Of Them Is Home

There is one of them in tonight and you are treating it as a night off.

That is what you would call it if anybody asked. Quiet one. Only one in. Nothing much happening.

And there is a person in this house right now, eating something at the counter, with twenty minutes free, who has been in that same position about forty times this year while their mother waited for a fuller house.

Here is what has been going on in your head, and it is arithmetic again: the family is five people, so anything less than five is not the family.

Nobody ever said that. But it has been running your evenings for years and it is why the one in tonight is filed as an off night rather than as an evening with somebody in it.

I want to check that arithmetic against something, because it produces an odd result.

By that count, your household almost never exists. Five people are in one room maybe once every two weeks, which means that for thirteen of every fourteen days you have been living in something you do not count as your family.

Where two or three are gathered

There is a promise in Matthew that people quote about prayer meetings and that says something quite specific about numbers.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20, King James Version)

Two. That is the number in the verse, and it is not presented as a minimum viable gathering that will have to do.

It is the number at which the whole promise applies, fully, with nothing withheld.

You are a parent with a whole household in the room, and one child at a table has never once been a partial version of your family. Matthew 18:20 puts the entire promise at two rather than scaling it with attendance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can correct a count without any charge against the person who was doing it.

And notice what is not in that verse. No mention of who is missing.

There is no clause about the ones who could not come, no adjustment for a smaller room, and no suggestion anywhere that a larger number would have got more.

You have been applying a scale that Scripture does not use, and a small gathering has never once received a smaller portion of anything. The Spirit of God is the one who removes an adjustment nobody authorized, and it is written in Matthew 18 that where two or three are gathered He is in the midst of them.

And the phrase in the midst is worth sitting with for a second.

In the middle. Not looking in on a reduced version. Present in the center of a room with two people in it as completely as in any other room.

You are able to have the whole of something in a room with two people in it, and a quiet house has never once been a house with less in it. It is written that there am I in the midst of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is entirely present at a table with one child at it.

What the waiting has cost that one

Now the part that will move you, and it is about the specific person eating something at the counter.

They have been the one who is in about forty times this year. And forty times, the evening has been treated as a quiet one.

Nobody told them that. Nobody had to. A person notices when their presence does not constitute an occasion.

You have somebody who has been in the room for a year without the room counting, and a child who was there alone has never once been less than a household to their own parent. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a parent what one person has been experiencing, and Matthew 18:20 attaches the whole promise to two.

And here is what it means to be the only one home when it counts.

Twenty minutes with a parent and nobody else in the room is a different object from twenty minutes with four siblings. It is not a lesser version. It is the thing that almost never happens and that a child will remember at thirty.

You are able to give somebody the rarest thing in that house, and undivided attention has never once been a consolation prize for a smaller evening. It is written in Matthew 18 that He is in the midst of two, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in a room where nobody is being shared.

So the quiet night is not the night off. It is the good one, and you have had forty of them.

You have been walking past the best evenings of the year, and a night with one person in it has never once been a night with nothing in it. The Spirit of God is the one who reclassifies something a parent has been discarding, and Scripture puts the presence at the center of two.

Do not mention the others

Here is the instruction and the second half is the one that matters.

Take the twenty minutes tonight with the one who is home. And do not mention the others once.

Not where they are, not when they will be back, not it is a shame the rest are out.

You are able to have an evening with nobody absent in it, and a room where nobody was mentioned has never once been a room that was missing anybody. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something complete, and Matthew 18:20 names two without listing who was elsewhere.

Because mentioning them puts them in the room, and it puts them in as a shortfall.

Say it is a shame the others are out, and the person sitting in front of you has just been told they constitute a reduced evening. They were not thinking that until it was said.

You have the power to make a table complete by leaving one sentence out, and an unmentioned absence has never once been felt by anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who works in something that was not said, and it is written that where two are gathered He is in the midst.

And do not make anything of it being just the two of you either.

No it is nice to have you to myself. That marks it too, in the other direction, and a fifteen year old hears the marking rather than the compliment.

You are able to let something rare be ordinary, and an evening nobody named has never once been an evening that did not land. It is written in Matthew 18 that the promise is stated plainly with no comment about the size of the room, and the Spirit of God is the one at work at an ordinary table with two people at it.
