Twenty Minutes Feels Like A Failure

Everybody keeps telling you twenty minutes is enough and it lands on you like an insult.

Not from them. From inside. Somebody says it kindly, and something in you hears you are not going to get any more than this, and here is a small consolation for a man who is not doing very well.

That is why the permission has not worked. It has been arriving as a lowered bar, and a lowered bar is a comment on the person standing under it.

So you have been declining it, mostly without noticing, for about a year.

Here is what is actually going on, and it is not about twenty minutes at all.

You have a picture of what a father gives his children, and it is a large picture, and it came from somewhere. Perhaps a house you grew up in, perhaps one you did not and wished you had.

Twenty minutes gets measured against that picture every time it is offered, and it comes up short every time, and the shortfall lands on the man rather than on the clock.

What hast thou in the house

There is a moment in Kings where a woman in serious trouble is asked a question that sounds unhelpful and turns out to be the whole answer.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. (2 Kings 4:2, King James Version)

She answers in the negative first. Not any thing. That is where she starts, and it is how anybody in that position starts.

And then the correction comes out of her own mouth: save a pot of oil.

You are a parent holding what is actually in the house, and twenty minutes has never once been a measure of what anybody failed to give. 2 Kings 4:2 asks what is present rather than what is missing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can turn that question on a man without any judgment riding on it.

And notice the shape of what she says. Nothing, except this one thing.

The word save is doing all the work. She has already dismissed the pot of oil in her own mind, and it takes a direct question to get it named out loud.

You have been dismissing something before it could be counted, and a small thing named out loud has never once been the nothing it felt like. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a person to say what they actually hold, and it is written in 2 Kings 4 that the whole answer was in the house the entire time.

And the prophet does not comfort her about the amount.

He does not say a pot of oil is enough. He does not adjust her expectations or offer her perspective. He asks what is there and then works with it.

You are able to be asked what you have rather than told to lower what you want, and a question about the present has never once been a comment about a man's failure. It is written that he said what hast thou in the house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who asks a man that in an ordinary week.

The picture is the problem

Now the part that matters, and it is about the measuring rather than the amount.

Twenty minutes feels like a failure because it is being measured. Take away the comparison and it is not small, it is simply twenty minutes.

Nothing about the amount changes. Everything about how it lands does.

You are able to remove a measurement rather than raise an amount, and an unmeasured twenty minutes has never once come up short of anything. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a ruler out of a man's hand, and 2 Kings 4:2 counts what is in a house without weighing it against anything.

And here is what the picture is actually made of, which is worth knowing.

It is made of hours you imagine other fathers give, evenings you think you should have had, and a version of yourself that has more time and less on him.

Not one of those exists. The picture is not a memory of anything and it is not a report on any actual household.

You have been failing to reach something that does not exist, and a man compared to an invention has never once been able to come out well. It is written in 2 Kings 4 that the answer was a pot of oil rather than a fair measure of what a household ought to have, and the Holy Spirit is the one who dissolves a picture nobody could have lived up to.

And your children do not have the picture. That is the thing to hold onto.

They are not comparing tonight to an ideal evening. They are eleven and fourteen and they have tonight, and tonight is twenty minutes with their father in one room, and there is no shortfall in it anywhere except the one you brought in.

You are able to hand them something with no deficit attached, and twenty minutes given plainly has never once been received as a scrap by anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in something offered without apology, and Scripture asks what is in the house and then multiplies it.

Say nothing about how small it is

Here is the instruction, and it has a silence in it.

Take the twenty minutes tonight without comparing it to anything. And say nothing about how small it is.

No I wish we had more time. No sorry it is only twenty minutes. No I know this is not much.

You are able to give something without apologizing for its size, and an unapologized twenty minutes has never once felt small to the people in it. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something handed over plainly, and 2 Kings 4:2 has a woman name what she has rather than what she lacks.

Because every apology installs the picture in them.

They did not have it. They were not measuring. And a father who says sorry it is only twenty minutes has just told two children that what they are getting is less than it should be, and they will believe him, because he is their father.

You have the power to hand over something whole, and a thing given without a comparison attached has never once arrived as a fragment. The Spirit of God is the one who works in something offered without a word about its size, and it is written that the prophet asked what was in the house and never once said it was too little.

And when the picture rises in you at about the fourth minute, name it privately and put it down.

You are able to feel a shortfall and hand over something whole anyway, and a picture in a man's head has never once been in the room with him. It is written in 2 Kings 4 that the oil filled every vessel they could find, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in twenty minutes nobody measured.
