I Was That Teenager And Never Said So

You did exactly what he does and you have never told him.

Your father asked. You said no. You went upstairs, or out, or wherever the equivalent was, and you did it for about three years without ever once thinking of it as a decision.

And now a boy in your house does the same thing to you and it lands like a message, and you have somehow forgotten that you were the one sending it thirty years ago.

You remember it, but as facts about a house that no longer exists. It has never crossed the bridge into being something you know about him.

Here is what is sitting there unused: you have first hand information about exactly what is happening in that boy, and you have never once put it in front of him.

Not because you are withholding it. Because saying it costs something, and men of your generation were not handed a way to say things like that at a table.

I am not going to ask you for a conversation. That is not coming and it would not go well anyway.

I am going to ask for one sentence, and I want to be honest that one sentence is harder than an hour of anything else.

Turn the heart of the fathers to the children

There is a verse at the very end of the Old Testament that describes a movement, and the direction of it is worth reading twice.

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers. (Malachi 4:6, King James Version)

Two turnings, and the fathers come first.

Not the children to the fathers and then the fathers back. The fathers turn first, and the children's turning is named second.

You are a father holding something worth more than an invitation, and one true sentence about yourself has never once cost a man his authority. Malachi 4:6 puts the fathers turning first in the order, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can show a man that without any suggestion that he has been failing.

And notice that the word is heart rather than attention or effort.

A heart turning is not a man doing more. It is a man being differently oriented, and the visible part of that is small: what he lets somebody see.

You have been doing everything except the one thing named, and years of showing up have never once been the same as turning toward somebody. The Spirit of God is the one who names something precisely without discounting anything else, and it is written in Malachi 4 that the turning is of the heart and that the fathers go first.

So the movement being asked for is not more asking, more evenings, or more effort.

It is a man letting his own son see one true thing about him.

You are able to make the first turn tonight, and one sentence about a man's own fifteen has never once been a smaller act than an hour at a table. It is written that he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the turning while a man is only saying something short.

What the sentence does

Now, why one sentence carries so much, because it will seem too small to bother with.

Right now, from where he stands, his father is a man who wants him to sit at a table. That is the whole of it. There is no version of that man in his head who was ever fifteen and refusing.

He knows facts about your childhood. He has never met the boy.

You are a stranger in one specific way, and a father his son has never met at fifteen has never once been a father who hid anything on purpose. The Spirit of God is the one who names a gap without blaming anybody for it, and Malachi 4:6 puts the turning of the fathers first because it is the one that unlocks the other.

And here is what changes when he hears it.

The man asking him to sit down stops being somebody who does not understand and becomes somebody who did the same thing. That is not sympathy and it is not permission. It is simply information he did not have.

A boy who knows his father was that boy has a different father, and nothing else in the house has to change.

You have something nobody else on earth can give him, and one fact about a man's own adolescence has never once been available from anywhere else. It is written in Malachi 4 that the turning runs in both directions and starts with the father, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves something across a table in eleven words.

And this is not a technique for getting a yes. I want to be direct about that.

He may still say no tonight and every night this month. That is not what the sentence is for. The sentence is for him to have, at twenty five, when he needs to know that a man can be both of those things.

You are able to give somebody something they will use in ten years, and a sentence said now has never once needed to work tonight to be worth saying. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a thing in a young man for a decade, and Scripture puts the turning of hearts at the very end of the book as the thing that matters.

One sentence, then nothing

Here is the instruction and both halves are load bearing.

Tell him one true thing about yourself at that age, in one sentence. Then say nothing else about it.

Not a story. Not a lesson. Not therefore you should. One sentence, said sideways while doing something else, and then complete silence on the subject.

You are able to say one true thing and stop, and a sentence with no lesson on the end has never once been a sentence anybody had to defend against. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something said and then left alone, and Malachi 4:6 asks for a turning rather than for a speech.

Here is what it sounds like, and short is essential.

I did that to my dad for about three years. Or: I never sat down with mine either. Or: I would have said no to this at your age.

Then nothing. No pause where he is meant to respond. Carry on with what your hands are doing.

You have permission to leave a true sentence lying on a table, and a thing said with no answer expected has never once put anybody on the spot. The Spirit of God is the one who works in what is not added, and it is written that the heart of the fathers turns first and the heart of the children follows in its own time.

And expect nothing back. Genuinely nothing.

He will probably say nothing at all, or something dismissive, and both of those are what a fifteen year old does with a thing he intends to keep.

You are able to hand something over and receive no receipt for it, and a sentence that got no answer has never once been a sentence that was not heard. It is written in Malachi 4 that the turning of the children is named second and separately, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a sentence somewhere a boy cannot get rid of it.
