I Asked Him In Front Of Everybody

It was the room that did it, not the question.

You have gone over the sentence about thirty times and it was a fine sentence. Short, warm, nothing heavy on it.

What you have not gone over is where you were standing when you said it, and that is the part that decided the answer.

Everybody was in the kitchen. His sister was there. Your husband was there. Somebody laughed at something just before you spoke, and the room was warm and open, and it seemed like a good moment.

And you said it out into the room, and he said no, and the no had an audience.

Here is what an audience does to a fifteen year old boy. It turns a question into a performance, and it makes any yes a public act with a cost attached, and it makes the no the only answer that protects him.

He was not refusing you. He was refusing to do that in front of his sister.

I am not going to tell you that you did something wrong, because you did not, and a woman who has been running that moment back for a two weeks does not need that.

I am going to move one thing, and it is not the sentence.

A word fitly spoken

There is a proverb about the right word at the right moment that is usually read as being about content, and is at least half about placement.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. (Proverbs 25:11, King James Version)

Fitly is a word about fit. Not about quality, not about truth, and not about warmth.

The proverb is describing something that suits its setting, the way a particular object suits a particular case made for it.

You are a mother whose offer was good, and a refusal made in front of an audience has never once been the same answer as one given quietly. Proverbs 25:11 puts the whole value on the fit rather than on the wording, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can show a woman a placement problem without turning it into a fault.

And notice what the image is actually doing.

Apples of gold in pictures of silver. Two beautiful things, and the point is the relationship between them. The setting is half the picture.

Take the same apples and put them somewhere else and the proverb stops working, and nobody would say the apples had got worse.

You have been examining the apple, and a good sentence in the wrong room has never once been a bad sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a woman's attention from the content to the setting, and it is written in Proverbs 25 that the fitness is where the value sits.

So your two weeks of running the sentence back was never going to find anything, because the sentence was fine.

You are able to stop searching a sentence for a fault, and two weeks of examining a good offer have never once been able to find something that was not there. It is written that a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold, and the Holy Spirit is the one who ends a search that could not have succeeded.

What the audience was doing

Now the mechanism, because it will keep you from doing it again by accident.

A question asked into a room is heard by everybody in it, which means the answer is given to everybody in it too.

A fifteen year old boy saying yes to his mother in front of his sister is not saying yes to twenty minutes. He is making a statement about who he is, in front of somebody who will remember it.

You are asking for twenty minutes and he is hearing something much larger, and a boy protecting himself in front of a sibling has never once been a boy rejecting his mother. The Spirit of God is the one who translates a room for a woman who could not see it from the middle of it, and Proverbs 25:11 puts the whole matter on the setting.

And the no is cheap in public in a way that a yes is not, which decides the outcome before he has thought about anything.

A no costs him nothing in front of an audience. A yes costs him something. Given about a second and a half, anybody would say no, and he did.

You have never once been refused by that boy, and a no that was cheap has never once been an answer to the question you asked. It is written in Proverbs 25 that the fit is what makes the word what it is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a mother stop reading a public no as a private one.

And there is one more thing, which is the reason to get this right rather than to keep trying.

Every public refusal makes the next one more likely. He now has a position, and positions get defended, and a boy who has said no in front of his family twice has something to be consistent with.

You are able to stop a pattern before it sets, and a question asked quietly has never once given anybody a position to defend. The Spirit of God is the one who works in something nobody else heard, and Scripture calls the fitting word a thing of gold.

Ask him where nobody can hear

Here is the instruction, and every part of it is about the room.

Ask him tonight where nobody else can hear it, in one short sentence, and then walk away.

Not a conversation. Not a moment. Find him where he already is, say one sentence, and go.

You are able to give somebody an answer that costs nothing either way, and a question with no audience has never once forced anybody into a position. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in a doorway where nobody else was listening, and Proverbs 25:11 puts the whole weight on the fitness of the setting.

And walk away immediately, which is the half that makes it work.

Do not stand there. Do not wait for the answer. Say the sentence, and go and do something else, so that he can come or not come without ever having to say anything at all.

You have a way to let somebody answer with their feet, and a question that needed no reply has never once been an easy thing to refuse. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a young person room to move, and it is written that the value of a word is in its fit.

And keep the sentence short and plain. Six or seven words.

I am doing this in a minute. That is the whole thing. No warmth added, no reason given, no history attached.

You are able to say something small enough to be answered by walking into a room, and one plain sentence has never once put anybody on the spot. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something said quietly and then left alone, and Proverbs 25 sets the golden thing in the right frame rather than in a better one.
