Afterward, you can always find the minute.
Lying in bed, running it back, there it is with total clarity: about nineteen minutes in, when everybody was laughing at the same thing. That was it. That was the top of it.
And you were still there twenty five minutes later, watching it come apart, wondering how a thing that good got here.
This happens most times. Not occasionally. Most times.
And you have concluded something about yourself out of it, which is that you have poor judgment about people, or that you are not paying enough attention, or that some instinct other parents have was never issued to you.
I want to dismantle that, because it is not a judgment problem and no amount of paying attention is going to fix it.
The peak of an evening is not visible from inside the evening. Nobody can see it. It is only ever visible afterward, because a peak is defined by what comes after it, and what comes after it has not happened yet while you are sitting there.
You have been asking yourself to do something that is not possible, and then grading yourself on the failure.
Eat so much as is sufficient for thee
There is a proverb about honey that is one of the most practical sentences in the Bible.
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. (Proverbs 25:16, King James Version)
Notice that the honey is good. That is the whole premise of the verse.
Nothing is wrong with it. It was worth finding. The problem is not the honey and the proverb never suggests otherwise.
The problem is quantity, and quantity is the only variable in the sentence.
You are a parent who does not need better judgment, and a moment you cannot see from inside has never once been a moment you were failing to notice. Proverbs 25:16 puts the whole issue on how much rather than on how good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a character question off a person and turns it into an arithmetic one.
And look at the phrase in the middle: so much as is sufficient for thee.
Sufficient is a measurable idea. It is not a feeling and it is not an instinct. It is an amount, decided in advance by somebody who knows roughly what they can carry.
You have been asked for a measurement and not for a sense, and an amount decided beforehand has never once required anybody to read a room correctly. The Spirit of God is the one who hands a person a measure instead of a burden, and it is written in Proverbs 25 that the sufficiency is set by the one eating and not discovered by tasting.
That is your whole answer and it is embarrassingly mechanical.
You are able to fix this with a number, and something set before an evening has never once been a lesser thing than a good instinct. It is written that the honey was worth finding, which means nothing in your evenings has been wrong except the length, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes something this ordinary count as wisdom.
The marker beats the read
Now the practical half, and there is one rule that makes it work.
Whatever the marker is, it has to be outside you.
A timer. A number of rounds. A point in the thing that everybody can see coming. Anything that arrives on its own without a person having to decide, in the moment, whether now is the moment.
You are able to hand the decision to something that cannot be talked round, and an external marker has never once been a failure of a parent's judgment. The Holy Spirit is the one at work in something as ordinary as a clock on a table, and Proverbs 25:16 asks for a sufficiency decided by the one who knows what they can hold.
Here is why an internal read will always lose, and this is the part that will set you free.
At the peak, the room is warm and everybody is happy and every signal in the environment says continue. The exact moment to stop is the one that feels most like a reason to stay.
That is not a flaw in you. That is what a peak is.
You have been fighting an argument you were always going to lose, and a good moment has never once been a reliable signal to keep going. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the shame out of losing an argument to a warm room, and it is written that a person is to stop at sufficient rather than at satisfied.
And set the marker earlier than feels right. Deliberately early.
If nineteen minutes is where the good part sits, set fifteen. Stopping five minutes before the peak costs you almost nothing and it removes the whole second half of the problem.
You are allowed to aim under, and finishing early has never once been the same thing as finishing badly. It is written in Proverbs 25 that the eating stops before the filling, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in an evening that ended while everybody still wanted it.
What you actually get back
Now the return on this, because it is bigger than one evening.
You get to be in the room. That is the part that has been missing for a long time.
A parent watching for the peak is not in the evening. That person is running an assessment, and an assessment is a job, and nobody enjoys a job. Hand the ending to a marker and there is nothing left to monitor.
You are able to be a person at your own table instead of a person managing it, and a parent who stopped watching has never once been a parent who stopped caring. The Spirit of God is the one who releases somebody from a job nobody gave them, and Proverbs 25:16 settles the amount before the eating starts so that the eating can be enjoyed.
And there is what it does to everybody else, which is the whole point of this site.
Twenty minutes in one room that ends well is a household that has been together. Forty five that ends badly is a household that remembers the last four minutes.
You have been giving away the good part to protect it, and an evening that stopped early has never once been an evening anybody was short changed on. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a short good thing sit in people, and it is written that the honey was found and worth finding.
Set the marker. Then be in the room.
You are two decisions away from a different evening, and one number set in advance has never once been too small a thing to change a household's Tuesday. It is written that the sufficiency is set by the one eating, and the Spirit of God is the one at work at a table where nobody is assessing anything.
So this is what I believe is going out over somebody who runs the evening back every night.
You are a parent who does not need better judgment, and a moment you cannot see from inside has never once been a moment you were failing to notice. I am not telling you every evening lands well from here. Proverbs 25:16 says eat so much as is sufficient for thee, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is taking a character verdict off somebody tonight.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been graded on something nobody can do, and a peak has never once been visible to the person standing on it. Scripture answers the whole problem with a measurement, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a number on a table into wisdom.
Set it early. Then be a person at your own table.
Declare this over yourself
- Minute I can only ever find afterward, you are a peak and you were never once visible from inside the evening. Proverbs 25:16 says eat so much as is sufficient for thee, so by the Holy Spirit I set the marker early tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that I read my own people badly, you have never once been a fair charge, because nobody sees a peak from on top of it. The written word answers this with a measure and not with an instinct, and by the Spirit of God I hand the ending to a clock.
- Father, You told a person who found honey to stop at sufficient rather than at satisfied. Your word says it in Proverbs 25, so by Your Spirit I set a number before I sit down and let it decide.
