It Ends In TearsProverbs 15:1

I End Every Game By Explaining It

This message is for the father who finishes each evening with an account of what went wrong, and has noticed that nobody wants to start another one

It always ends with you talking.

Not shouting. Nothing like that. Something much more reasonable and much harder to see, which is a short summary of the evening delivered in a level voice while people are putting things away.

If we had waited on that. If nobody had rushed the middle bit. If we all just listened when somebody is halfway through.

Every word of it true. Every word of it aimed at making the next one better.

And you have noticed something that has been bothering you for months: nobody wants to start another one.

They will sit down when asked. They do not ask. And there is no obvious reason, because the evenings themselves are mostly fine, and the trouble is not in the evenings.

The trouble is that the last thing that happens at your table, every single time, is an assessment.

I am not going to tell you the assessments are wrong. They are accurate, which is exactly the problem. A man who was inaccurate would be easy to ignore.

A soft answer turneth away wrath

There is a proverb about the shape of a reply that people read as advice about tone and is really about what a reply produces.

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1, King James Version)

Grievous words does not mean cruel words. The Hebrew idea underneath it is a word that causes pain or effort, something that costs the hearer.

A true sentence can be grievous. A fair sentence can be grievous. Accuracy has nothing to do with it.

You are a father whose silence carries weight, and an evening that ended without an explanation has never once been an evening that taught nothing. Proverbs 15:1 puts the weight on what a word produces rather than on whether it was fair, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man look at that without any accusation on him.

And notice the two outcomes on offer in the verse. Turning away, or stirring up.

Both are about what happens after the words. Neither is about whether the words were deserved.

Your summaries do not stir up anger, because nobody argues with you. They do something quieter. They stir up the reluctance you have been noticing.

You have been producing something you never intended, and a correct sentence has never once been the same thing as a sentence worth saying. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man the effect of something he has only ever measured for accuracy, and it is written in Proverbs 15 that words are weighed by what they raise.

So this is not about becoming a softer man. It is about the position of one sentence.

You are able to move a sentence rather than change your character, and holding something back at the end has never once required a man to stop noticing things. It is written that a soft answer turns wrath away, which is about what an answer does, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in the ordinary decision to say nothing at all.

The last thing said becomes the whole thing

Now let me explain the mechanism, because it will make sense of the reluctance immediately.

An evening does not get remembered in proportion. The last thirty seconds do most of the filing.

Everything that happened before gets sorted afterward, and whatever the final voice in the room said becomes the label on the container. Your table's label, forty times running, has been what went wrong.

You are the person who writes the label, and forty minutes of a good evening have never once outweighed the last thirty seconds of it. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man where the filing actually happens, and Proverbs 15:1 puts the whole weight of a reply on what it leaves behind.

And here is why they sit down when asked and never ask.

Nobody in that house is avoiding the evening. They are avoiding the end of it. And since the end is attached to the evening, the whole thing gets quietly declined.

That is not a judgment on your children and it is not a failure of yours. It is what anybody does about a thing that finishes with a review.

You have a household that likes the middle and dreads the last minute, and a family that stopped asking has never once been a family that stopped wanting it. It is written in Proverbs 15 that grievous words stir something up regardless of their fairness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads a room accurately for a man who has been reading himself.

And notice what this means about the fix, which is very small.

Nothing about the evening has to change. Nothing about you has to change. One sentence has to not be said.

You are one omission away from a different table, and thirty seconds of silence have never once been too small a change to reach a whole household. The Spirit of God is the one who does something with what a man declines to say, and Scripture measures a word by what it turns away or stirs up.

Where the teaching actually goes

Now the objection, because a man who has been doing this for years is doing it for a reason and the reason is good.

The reason is that you want them to learn something. You can see it. It is right there. Saying it seems like the obvious service.

The problem is not the content. It is the timing, and the timing has been quietly destroying the content.

You are able to keep everything you noticed, and a thing said at a better moment has never once been a thing given up. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds a true observation in a man until it can land, and it is written in Proverbs 15 that a soft answer does the turning.

Because a summary at the end of an evening arrives when everybody is tired, when the thing is already over, and when nothing can be done about any of it.

Nobody learns anything at that moment. They wait for it to finish and they carry away the tone.

The same sentence, said four days later in a car, with nothing at stake and no audience, actually gets heard.

You have not lost a single one of your observations, and something held back has never once been something wasted. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a man the timing he has never had, and Proverbs 15:1 puts the whole matter on the effect and not on the truth.

So keep noticing. Keep all of it. Move the delivery, and let the table end in nothing.

You are allowed to end an evening with nothing at all, and a table that finished quietly has never once been a table that finished badly. It is written that grievous words stir up anger while a soft answer turns it away, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in an evening that nobody summarized.

The breakthrough

So this is what I believe is going out over a man who has been closing every evening with an accurate paragraph.

You are a father whose silence carries weight, and an evening that ended without an explanation has never once been an evening that taught nothing. I am not telling you the observations were wrong. Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turneth away wrath, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who has had a man wondering for months why nobody asks any more.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have everything you need to keep and one thing to move, and a sentence relocated has never once been a sentence surrendered. Scripture measures words by what they turn away or stir up, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a father the timing to say the same true thing in a car.

Say nothing at the finish. That is the whole of it and it costs you thirty seconds.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Summary I give at the end of every evening, you are true and you were never once useful at that hour. Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turneth away wrath, so by the Holy Spirit I say nothing at the finish tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that saying nothing teaches nothing, you have never once accounted for a car on a Saturday. The written word weighs a word by what it stirs up and not by whether it was fair, and by the Spirit of God I hold what I noticed until it can land.
  3. Father, You measured a reply by what it turns away rather than by whether it was deserved. Your word says it in Proverbs 15, so by Your Spirit I let my table end in nothing tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
