He cried again on Sunday.
Not badly. Not for long. But there it was, the same as the time before and the time before that, and afterward you sat there with the thing still on the table and did the arithmetic that a decent man does.
He was fine before I got that out. He is not fine now. Therefore.
That is the sentence, and I want you to hear how fast it assembled itself. Three parts, no evidence in the middle, and a verdict at the end.
Nobody in your house has ever said it. Your wife has not said it. The child certainly has not said it, and would be baffled if you told him what you have been carrying.
There is exactly one person who believes you are the reason, and he is reading this.
I am not going to tell you the tears are not real. They are, and you are not imagining the pattern, and it does happen more with you than with anybody else.
I am going to tell you what that actually means, and it is nearly the opposite of what you think it means.
A bruised reed shall he not break
There is a description of the Messiah in Isaiah that is quoted about gentleness and is really about strength held back.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. (Isaiah 42:3, King James Version)
Look at the two objects. A reed already bent. A wick already going out.
Both are described as damaged before He arrives. The bruising happened somewhere else. The verse does not say He avoids reeds, it says He does not break the ones that are already bruised.
You are a man who never once broke anything, and a child's tears at a table have never been the verdict you have been reading them as. Isaiah 42:3 puts the bruising before the handling rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates those two things inside a man who has run them together for a year.
Now bring that back to your kitchen, because it explains the pattern you have noticed.
Your son cries with you more than with anybody else. That is true and the counting was correct.
Here is the other reading of the same fact: he is a reed that is already bent about something, and you are the person he is willing to bend in front of. Children do not come apart in front of people they are managing. They come apart in front of the ones who are safe.
You have been reading safety as damage, and a child who cries in front of his father has never once been a child who was hurt by him. The Spirit of God is the one who can turn a man's whole account of a year around in one sentence, and it is written in Isaiah 42 that the bruising and the handling are two different events.
And notice what the verse says about what He does with a bruised thing. He does not fix it, and He does not quench it, and He does not put it down.
He holds it without breaking it. That is the whole ministry described in that line, and it is the exact thing a father does when he stays at a table with a crying child.
You are already doing the thing the verse describes, and staying in a chair has never once been a smaller act than making somebody stop crying. It is written that the smoking flax shall not be quenched, which is about not putting out what is barely burning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a father that presence was the assignment.
The accusation nobody made
Now let me deal with the sentence itself, because it has been running your evenings.
He was fine before, he is not fine now, therefore I caused it. That is a shape, not an argument.
The missing piece in the middle is any account of what actually happened, and there is one, and it has nothing to do with you starting anything.
You are carrying a conclusion with a hole in the middle of it, and a sequence of events has never once been the same thing as a cause. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a badly built sentence apart without shaming the man who built it, and Isaiah 42:3 puts the damage before the hands that hold it.
Here is what is far more likely, and you will recognize it.
Something at a table asks a small person to do several hard things at once. To wait. To lose. To be worse at something than somebody older. To be watched while all of that happens.
Any child will come apart at that occasionally, and it is not a defect and it is not a wound, and it means nothing about the man who set the thing on the table.
You have not been causing anything, and an evening with a hard moment in it has never once been an evening that should not have happened. It is written in Isaiah 42 that He brings forth judgment unto truth, which is a promise about accurate verdicts, and the Holy Spirit is the one who corrects a false one inside a father.
And here is the cost of the accusation, which is the reason I am spending this long on it.
A man who believes he causes the tears stops starting things. Then the child gets fewer evenings with his father, and the one thing that was actually working stops happening.
You are the person that child comes apart in front of, and a man who stopped starting things has never once made a household safer. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a father at a table, and Scripture describes a hand that holds a bent reed rather than one that puts it down.
Stay in the chair
So the instruction is almost nothing, and that is deliberate.
Sit down with him tonight and stay in the chair for twenty minutes, whatever the evening does.
If it goes fine, stay. If he cries, stay. Do not fix it, do not end it early to protect him, and do not apologize for having started it.
You are able to stay where you are while somebody is upset, and a father who did not leave has never once been a father who made it worse. The Holy Spirit is the one who is in a room where nothing was rescued, and Isaiah 42:3 describes a hand that neither breaks nor quenches nor lets go.
That is harder than it sounds, and I want to name why, because you will feel the pull.
When he goes, everything in you will want to end the evening. Putting it away feels like mercy and it is really relief, and the relief is yours.
Stay. Sit with the crying, do not solve it, and let the evening carry on when it carries on.
You have permission to do nothing except be there, and twenty minutes of staying have never once been worth less than twenty minutes of fixing. The Spirit of God is the one who does the mending while a man is only sitting still, and it is written that the smoking flax is not quenched by the one holding it.
And say nothing afterward about whether it went well. Nothing at all.
You are able to let an evening be ordinary after a hard minute in it, and a table that carried on has never once been a table that failed. It is written in Isaiah 42 that He brings forth judgment unto truth, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a man stop passing sentence on his own evenings.
So this is what I believe is going out over a man who has been passing sentence on himself since the spring.
You are a man who never once broke anything, and a child's tears at a table have never been the verdict you have been reading them as. I am not telling you he stops crying. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is taking an accusation off a man that nobody in his house ever made.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been the safe one all along, and a child who comes apart in front of his father has never once been a child in the wrong room. Scripture puts the bruising before the hands and promises judgment brought forth unto truth, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a man an accurate verdict about his own year.
You did not start it. You were there for it, which is a completely different thing and a much better one.
Declare this over yourself
- Sentence that says I caused it, you are a sequence and you were never once a cause. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, so by the Holy Spirit I sit down with him tonight and stay, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that starting things damages my son, you have never once been said out loud by anybody in this house. The written word puts the bruising before the hand that holds it, and by the Spirit of God I stay in the chair for the whole twenty minutes.
- Father, You described a hand that holds a bent reed and does not break it. Your word says it in Isaiah 42, so by Your Spirit I stop passing sentence on myself for evenings I never once ruined.
